Cold Health Alert

The current Amber Cold Health Alert has again been extended across the south east and is now due to last until midday on Monday.

Anyone can become unwell if they get too cold, not just vulnerable loved ones and neighbours. UKHSA offers helpful advice on how to stay warm and healthy during freezing weather.

We’ve also activated our Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, meaning we’re providing emergency shelter to anyone found sleeping rough in the borough. Visit the link below to find out more about SWEP and support available.

Keep safe on icy roads

The first snow of the year has fallen. Help keep the roads safe for yourself and other road users by following the tips below to ensure a safe travelling experience for all.

For drivers:

  • Drive slowly, and with gentle acceleration and braking. This is to avoid slipping on ice.
  • Leave space between yourself and other road users, including other cars, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Ensure your tires are in good condition for proper traction on the ice.

For cyclists:

  • Wear high-visibility clothing to ensure you are visible while travelling on the road.
  • Use lights and reflectors on bicycles.

Our winter salt and gritting plan is in action, making roads safer for all residents and visitors.

In areas that are inaccessible for salt lorries, salt bins are available for residents to use. For more info, please email winter.service@rbwm.gov.uk

School admissions portal closing soon

The deadline to apply for school admissions for students starting school or moving up to junior school is next week.

Parents or carers can register to apply through the portal to start the application process before Thursday 15 January 2026.

Remember to check your collection days

We’re reminding residents that bin and waste collection days will be on an amended schedule until Monday 19 January - read more via our holiday collection dates webpage.

Please put your bin or sack on the kerbside before 7am on collection day and no earlier than the night before.

If you have a garden waste subscription service, you can also chop up your real Christmas tree and place it in your green bin for collection when it resumes on Monday 12 JanuaryIf your tree does not fit into the bin, or you do not have a subscription, you can take it to your nearest household recycling centre.

Please do not leave your tree next to your bin as our crews will not be able to collect it.
