Bus improvements from this Sunday

Minor improvements to some bus routes starting from Sunday 31 August to better serve residents’ needs, including changing the timetable and route in some cases. The new changes will result in a steadier timetable and include more buses on some routes to support increased usage by residents.

Come along to the Merchant Navy flag-raising ceremony

Merchant Navy Day is held on 3 September each year to honour the brave men and women who kept the UK afloat during both World Wars, to promote greater awareness of the country’s maritime heritage and to highlight the country’s continued dependence on modern day merchant seafarers.

Residents are invited to view the flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall Memorial at 10am on Wednesday 3 September where the Mayor, Cllr Mandy Brar, will lead a short ceremony. Following the ceremony the Red Ensign will be raised.

As young adults go off to university, you or someone you know may be left with more time - and space - to consider fostering.

Fostering can be a beautiful experience for both carer and child, and it often significantly improves a child's life.

If you are interested in fostering, or know somebody that might be, get in touch with the team at fosteringenquiries@achievingforchildren.org.uk or visit

Emergency Alert Test - Sunday 7 September

The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm. Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. You will not need to take any action.

The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency. Find out more at gov.uk/alerts

As summer winds down, students will be returning to school in the coming weeks.

Back-to-school dates will differ for students, depending on their year and school. Please check directly on the school's website for the most up-to-date information.
